We follow Sam, a security agent in a shopping mall. On a normal day, a bomb explodes. Sam tries to save the victims, until something terrible happens. He runs off till he falls down from exhaustion. A woman’s voice makes him raise his head. She is one of the victims he saved. She wants to know why the suicide bomber did it.
Thereafter he runs into everyone he saved and feels that their defeat shows many parallels with his own. Even the confrontation with the wrongdoer is not that straightforward as he thought it would be. He finds out that guilt and innocence can be pretty much alike.

KOEN MORTIER (Beernem, 1965)
In 1996, he directed his first short, Ana Temnei, which won, amongst several prices, a Gold Award at the Worldfest in Houston in 1997. His second short, A Hard Day’s Works, will win even more prices and has been selected on more than 30 festivals worldwide.
In 1998 he starts up his own production company, CZAR.BE. In September 2002, CZAR.BE starts up CCCP, a production company that focuses on feature films and documentaries. Like that he could start with the finance and the production of his first feature film, Ex Drummer (2007). He is currently working on Haunted, based on the novel by Chuck Palahniuk.

The film plays out the angst-ridden psychosis that is all too often imposed on us by the media who make themselves culpable by doing this. But it also has to portray the victims, while at the same time underlining the banality of their lives; and how the idea of being in the wrong place at the wrong time somehow hints at fate seemingly playing a grim game with humanity. It considers real people who had real lives before it all ended in an inferno… I hope that it can become an anti-violence film without becoming patronising. I don’t want to point fingers or moralise. It is not my intention be overly sentimental or to dilute the emotions in a contrived way. Nor is it my intention to send a political message to the world about my own perspective. (Koen Mortier)
